Katadyn Micropur MP1 Water Purification Tablets (30 Count)
Great for your emergency/survival/camping kit There are some great reviews on here explaining the merits shelf lives and methods of water purification. I'm a big believer in having multiple methods of water purification in an emergency situation. I feel that having multiple redundant solutions for making fire and cleaning water are key and have made them the primary components of my survival kits for my car hiking and home. These tablets come in individually wrapped foil packs and are designed to combat bacteria found in your water. I'd still recommend a physical filtration system to work alongside this chemical purification methodbut if I had to choose between a filter and these tablets these tablets are a surefire method to remove bacteriafilters well they are better for filtering chemicals not the super small bacteria.
Pure and Simple I've used the Katadyn Micropur tablets on two recent backpacking trips in conjunction with the Katadyn Pocket Water Filter. As a physician I am well aware of the inconveniences of drinking contaminated water so I am am doubly compulsive both filtering and treating all the water we drink on our trips. The Micropur tablets are great. I know that this treatment will take of any microorganisms particularly viruses that might get through the filter. The water initially is slightly yellow after treating with the tablets but this is pretty much gone by morning. The best thing about these tablets is that the water tastes very good with virtually no after taste. It's really quite remarkable. The downsides are that it takes 4 hours to treat the water but better safe than sorry and they are very expensive but not as expensive as a hospitalization. You need one tablet per liter of water so bring a lot if you are planning a long trip and/or get very thirsty.
It worked It's impossible to tell if things like this work because if you don't get sick you don't know if the water was infected or not. Nonetheless on my last backpacking trip I planned on getting water from a stream that I saw on a map.The stream ended up being extremely low almost dry actually. The water was brown almost completely still and very sketchy looking I was pretty reluctant to drink it but I didn't have any other source of water for the trip.I filled a 40oz container and added the pill. Waited 4 hours and drank the whole thing. Then got more water for the rest of the trip.
Pure easy water with no taste! I decided to try the MP1 purification tablets and use them as a backup to my filter when backpacking. When the temperature is above freezing I always use a Katadyn Vario filter which is amazing. But I wanted to have a backup should this filter ever malfunction beyond repair in the field. I don't want to rely on boiling water due to fuel usage or building a fire.Since I have a VERY good sense of smell I never bothered trying iodine after hearing about the smell and taste. I was curious about the MP1 tablets so I treated 1 liter of tap water just to test it before using it in the field. After being treated for 2 hours in a Nalgene I noticed a very slight chlorinelike odor similar to when you walk into a hotel with a pool the air has that fresh smell. I drank a few ounces and could not taste anything at all.
Simple Lightweight and Effective Katadyn MicroPur Purification Tablets are a necessary and vital part of my gear to prevent illness from waterborne diseases. The tablets contain Chlorine Dioxide. They are very easy to use portable and individually wrapped. They also have a long shelf life of 5 years. Micropur tablets are effective against viruses bacteria Giardia and Cryptosporidium. One tablet destroys+ Viruses and bacteria in 15 minutes+ Giardia in 30 minutes+ Cryptosporidium in 4 hoursWhen possible I recommend doing research to determine the water quality in the area that you will be backpacking or camping especially to determine if the water contains Cryptosporidium since this is what causes the 4 hour wait time. If there is no Cryptosporidium then you won't need to wait 4 hours. When backpacking or camping I firmly believe in using multiple methods to ensure clean drinkable water.
Works as asdvertised This product appears to work as advertisedmy one gripe about it is that you have to wait 4 hours after putting the tablets in the water before it is safe to drink.
Katadyn MicroPur Purification Tablets Excellent product used for a backpacking trip in Kauai worked out perfectly. I wish it only took a little bit faster to make the water ready. Otherwise no complaints. After water is ready it has a slight scent of chlorine but if you leave the bottle open for sometime it completely disappears.
Part of my 72 hour bag I can't comment on the effectiveness of this product in treating contaminated water because I haven't had to use it yet and I pray I never will. After receiving a note from my local authorities that every family should be ready to live without services for 72 hours I finally broke down and started building my 72 hour emergency kit. A little research on Google reinforced my thought that safe drinkable water was a primary need in an extended emergency. I have several sources of good water in reserve already so this is really for a worst case scenario where I'm forced to start using alternative water supplies like the rain water in my sump pump pit. If it gets that far I'd like to have some confidence that I've killed as many germs as I can with one of these tablets. What I like about these water treatment tablets is as follows long shelf life means I'm only replacing these every 5 years low cost means I can afford to replace them every 5 years small size 30 tablets takes almost no room in my 72 hour kit and they weigh almost nothing individually wrapped tablets so the unused tablets aren't exposed to the environment when I use one each tablet treats 1 quart of water which is a manageable size for meI plan on adding something like the Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter to my kit to provide additional options.
Tablets are individually sealed in waterproof strips for longer shelf life and to reduce weight. Each tablet is premeasured to treat 1 liter of water -no mixing or measuring required.Works in 30 minutes in most water (4 hours if the water is cold and dirty). The only purification tablet (or liquid) EPA registered as a microbiological water purifier. The only tablet or liquid proven effective against viruses, bacteria, Giardia and Cryptosporidium in all water conditions. Easy to use and taking up almost no space at all, MicroPur tablets are ideal water treatment solutions for lightweight backpacking, travel or emergency use. Katadyn's MicroPur Tablets are the only EPA-registered purification tablets on the market effective against bacteria, viruses and cysts, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Each MicroPur tablet releases sufficient chlorine dioxide, the substance used throughout the world to disinfect municipal water supplies, to treat 1 full quart of water. MicroPur leaves virtually no taste, so you can enjoy fresh-tasting water. Available in packs of 20 or 30 tablets, the individually-wrapped MicroPur tablets have no expiration date.
