  • The only tablet or liquid proven effective against viruses, bacteria, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium in all water conditions
  • The only purification tablet (or liquid) EPA registered as a microbiological water purifier
  • Works in 30 minutes in most water (four hours if the water is cold and dirty)
  • Tablets are individually sealed in waterproof strips for a longer shelf life and to reduce weight
  • Each tablet is premeasured to treat one liter of water; no mixing or measuring required

  • Perfectly packaged. I have not used these to purify water yet but I must say that they are packaged perfectly to add to a small survival kit or a survival tin. They are individually packaged and flat and that was just what I needed for my Altoids tin mini survival kit. They have a good reputation and I have no doubt as to their quality.
Simple Lightweight and Effective Katadyn MicroPur Purification Tablets are a necessary and vital part of my gear to prevent illness from waterborne diseases. The tablets contain Chlorine Dioxide. They are very easy to use portable and individually wrapped. They also have a long shelf life of 5 years. Micropur tablets are effective against viruses bacteria Giardia and Cryptosporidium. One tablet destroys+ Viruses and bacteria in 15 minutes+ Giardia in 30 minutes+ Cryptosporidium in 4 hoursWhen possible I recommend doing research to determine the water quality in the area that you will be backpacking or camping especially to determine if the water contains Cryptosporidium since this is what causes the 4 hour wait time. If there is no Cryptosporidium then you won't need to wait 4 hours. When backpacking or camping I firmly believe in using multiple methods to ensure clean drinkable water. If you have ever been sick from drinking contaminated water and are hours away from help you will appreciate the benefit this tablet provides. I always use a water filter in conjunction with using the MicroPur purification tablets. One tablet treats one liter of water so plan accordingly on how many tablets you may need. I have noticed a slight chlorine after taste when the water is warm but when the water is cold I have never notice any after taste. For those who despise a four hour wait time you can try the following method. To help get around the four hour wait time I always have a least two Nalgene water bottles. When one bottle is empty I will add water to the bottle and treat it with a MicroPur purification tablet while my other bottle still contains drinkable water. I continually rotate my drinkable water with water that is being treated. Remember the bottle threads may contain water that is not treated and can get you sick so take appropriate precautions. While this isn't a perfect method it does seem to work fairly well as long as you have a water source available. In a desert environment this method tends not to work well due to the lack of available water sources. In those cases I carry a lot of water. Some drawbacks to this product include Four hour wait time for cryptosporidium Tablets can get crushed so pack them well The package can be difficult to open Safety caveat! There are Precautionary Statements statingDANGER Corrosive. Causes irreversible eye damage and skin burns. Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Harmful if swallowed. Do not get in eyes on skin or on clothing.
Comparing chemical treatment methods The EPA estimates that 90% of the world's fresh water is contaminated and unsuitable for drinking. The days of kneeling down on a hike and sipping from the stream are long gone. Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because water looks clear or tastes good that it is free of contaminants. That includes frozen water which can house hepatitis A Salmonella and Cryptosporidium for months. There are many options for purifying the water but this post will compare commercial products that rely on halogen chemical treatments.Polar Pure contains iodine crystals has an almost indefinite shelf life if kept tightly sealed and very inexpensive per dose cost requires measuring the dosage using the cap which can be imprecise.Potable Aqua contains iodine tablets shelf life of up to four years if properly stored if they've turned a light green don't use moderately expensive per dose cost easy to administer doses two tablets per quart of water.Micropur MP1 contains chlorine dioxide tablets has a shelf life of at least four years moderately expensive per dose cost and comes in easy to administer doses one tablet per quart of water.Simple household bleach 2 drops per quart of water assuming a a bleach solution of 56% hypochlorite may wish to double the dose for cloudy water shelf life of bleach is only about 6 months must use a dropper to administer dose very inexpensive per dose cost.Tincture of iodine 5 drops per quart assuming a 2% iodine solution may wish to double the dose for cloudy water almost indefinite shelf life if properly stored must use a dropper to administer dose modest per dose cost. All of the methods are effective at killing bacteria somewhat effective against viruses and of limited value against protozoa cysts. Cryptosporidium in particular is resistant to halogen treatments.
Worked for me I used these pills on 430 miles of hiking along the southern AT last year. I didn't get sick drinking from the springs along the trail. The recommended 4 hour treatment is a disadvantage and you need to plan for it. I carried two full quart bottles and always filled and treated a bottle whenever it got empty. I also treated water overnight and used untreated water when boiling water for meals. Some hikers believe that filters are actually lighter because they don't need to carry as much water and that makes up for the weight of the pump. Personally I didn't mind carrying extra H2O especially when springs turn out to be dry.
Great option but WAY too expensive ! I took off TWO stars for pricing and deceptive marketing.PROS* INDIVIDUAL FOIL PACKAGING flat perforated encapsulation. This packaging flat/foil is IDEAL for pocket kits tins medkits !* Much less nasty aftertaste than iodine has a chlorine taste.* Only one tablet per quart/liter required.CONS* VERY high price per quart ! PROHIBITIVE IMO.Potassium Permanganate Crystals are a more reasonable alternative* ONLY 20 Tablets at this high price !* Takes FOUR HOURS in cool temps before water is safe to drink.BOTTOM LINE This is really the very best and only option for longterm storage in small/flat kits at whatever price. The durable individually sealed flexible foil cardpacks allow for compact longterm storage where no other options can really do quite as well fit. At this pricepoint perliter I would recommend ONLY one package of these for your most compact kits . Caveats READ ALL WARNINGS VERY CAREFULLY ! DO not touch the tablets or allow any residue to make contact with your eyes !! Wash your hands and do not rub your eyes after *NOT* touching!ALSO Do not let these foilpacks get too warm for too long.If you have a choice do not store against your body or on the outside edge of your pack In your car? Avoid the trunk and go for under the seat storage or even in a minicooler on the floor.
Best tasting water but takes a long time My friend and I went on a five day backpacking trip in CA and hands down these tablets produced the most normal tasting water. We had access to plenty of lakes streams and sometimes a pond looking pool of water. We didn't take a chance so we treated all sources with this and a different brand. Although other brands took only a few minutes this one takes at least four hours to treat. Other brands actually change the color into an orange color but this Katadyn makes the water clear and we couldn't tell the difference.Again the four hour treatment time takes a bit of planning but definitely worth it.
