Katadyn Micropur MP1 Purification Tablets Simple, Lightweight, and Effective

    Katadyn Micropur MP1 Purification Tablets
Katadyn Micropur MP1 Purification Tablets Read more...

  • The only tablet or liquid proven effective against viruses, bacteria, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium in all water conditions
  • The only purification tablet (or liquid) EPA registered as a microbiological water purifier
  • Works in 30 minutes in most water (four hours if the water is cold and dirty)
  • Tablets are individually sealed in waterproof strips for a longer shelf life and to reduce weight
  • Each tablet is premeasured to treat one liter of water; no mixing or measuring required

  • Perfectly packaged. I have not used these to purify water yet but I must say that they are packaged perfectly to add to a small survival kit or a survival tin. They are individually packaged and flat and that was just what I needed for my Altoids tin mini survival kit. They have a good reputation and I have no doubt as to their quality.
Simple Lightweight and Effective Katadyn MicroPur Purification Tablets are a necessary and vital part of my gear to prevent illness from waterborne diseases. The tablets contain Chlorine Dioxide. They are very easy to use portable and individually wrapped. They also have a long shelf life of 5 years. Micropur tablets are effective against viruses bacteria Giardia and Cryptosporidium. One tablet destroys+ Viruses and bacteria in 15 minutes+ Giardia in 30 minutes+ Cryptosporidium in 4 hoursWhen possible I recommend doing research to determine the water quality in the area that you will be backpacking or camping especially to determine if the water contains Cryptosporidium since this is what causes the 4 hour wait time. If there is no Cryptosporidium then you won't need to wait 4 hours. When backpacking or camping I firmly believe in using multiple methods to ensure clean drinkable water. If you have ever been sick from drinking contaminated water and are hours away from help you will appreciate the benefit this tablet provides. I always use a water filter in conjunction with using the MicroPur purification tablets. One tablet treats one liter of water so plan accordingly on how many tablets you may need. I have noticed a slight chlorine after taste when the water is warm but when the water is cold I have never notice any after taste. For those who despise a four hour wait time you can try the following method. To help get around the four hour wait time I always have a least two Nalgene water bottles. When one bottle is empty I will add water to the bottle and treat it with a MicroPur purification tablet while my other bottle still contains drinkable water. I continually rotate my drinkable water with water that is being treated. Remember the bottle threads may contain water that is not treated and can get you sick so take appropriate precautions. While this isn't a perfect method it does seem to work fairly well as long as you have a water source available. In a desert environment this method tends not to work well due to the lack of available water sources. In those cases I carry a lot of water. Some drawbacks to this product include Four hour wait time for cryptosporidium Tablets can get crushed so pack them well The package can be difficult to open Safety caveat! There are Precautionary Statements statingDANGER Corrosive. Causes irreversible eye damage and skin burns. Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Harmful if swallowed. Do not get in eyes on skin or on clothing.
Comparing chemical treatment methods The EPA estimates that 90% of the world's fresh water is contaminated and unsuitable for drinking. The days of kneeling down on a hike and sipping from the stream are long gone. Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because water looks clear or tastes good that it is free of contaminants. That includes frozen water which can house hepatitis A Salmonella and Cryptosporidium for months. There are many options for purifying the water but this post will compare commercial products that rely on halogen chemical treatments.Polar Pure contains iodine crystals has an almost indefinite shelf life if kept tightly sealed and very inexpensive per dose cost requires measuring the dosage using the cap which can be imprecise.Potable Aqua contains iodine tablets shelf life of up to four years if properly stored if they've turned a light green don't use moderately expensive per dose cost easy to administer doses two tablets per quart of water.Micropur MP1 contains chlorine dioxide tablets has a shelf life of at least four years moderately expensive per dose cost and comes in easy to administer doses one tablet per quart of water.Simple household bleach 2 drops per quart of water assuming a a bleach solution of 56% hypochlorite may wish to double the dose for cloudy water shelf life of bleach is only about 6 months must use a dropper to administer dose very inexpensive per dose cost.Tincture of iodine 5 drops per quart assuming a 2% iodine solution may wish to double the dose for cloudy water almost indefinite shelf life if properly stored must use a dropper to administer dose modest per dose cost. All of the methods are effective at killing bacteria somewhat effective against viruses and of limited value against protozoa cysts. Cryptosporidium in particular is resistant to halogen treatments.
Worked for me I used these pills on 430 miles of hiking along the southern AT last year. I didn't get sick drinking from the springs along the trail. The recommended 4 hour treatment is a disadvantage and you need to plan for it. I carried two full quart bottles and always filled and treated a bottle whenever it got empty. I also treated water overnight and used untreated water when boiling water for meals. Some hikers believe that filters are actually lighter because they don't need to carry as much water and that makes up for the weight of the pump. Personally I didn't mind carrying extra H2O especially when springs turn out to be dry.
Great option but WAY too expensive ! I took off TWO stars for pricing and deceptive marketing.PROS* INDIVIDUAL FOIL PACKAGING flat perforated encapsulation. This packaging flat/foil is IDEAL for pocket kits tins medkits !* Much less nasty aftertaste than iodine has a chlorine taste.* Only one tablet per quart/liter required.CONS* VERY high price per quart ! PROHIBITIVE IMO.Potassium Permanganate Crystals are a more reasonable alternative* ONLY 20 Tablets at this high price !* Takes FOUR HOURS in cool temps before water is safe to drink.BOTTOM LINE This is really the very best and only option for longterm storage in small/flat kits at whatever price. The durable individually sealed flexible foil cardpacks allow for compact longterm storage where no other options can really do quite as well fit. At this pricepoint perliter I would recommend ONLY one package of these for your most compact kits . Caveats READ ALL WARNINGS VERY CAREFULLY ! DO not touch the tablets or allow any residue to make contact with your eyes !! Wash your hands and do not rub your eyes after *NOT* touching!ALSO Do not let these foilpacks get too warm for too long.If you have a choice do not store against your body or on the outside edge of your pack In your car? Avoid the trunk and go for under the seat storage or even in a minicooler on the floor.
Best tasting water but takes a long time My friend and I went on a five day backpacking trip in CA and hands down these tablets produced the most normal tasting water. We had access to plenty of lakes streams and sometimes a pond looking pool of water. We didn't take a chance so we treated all sources with this and a different brand. Although other brands took only a few minutes this one takes at least four hours to treat. Other brands actually change the color into an orange color but this Katadyn makes the water clear and we couldn't tell the difference.Again the four hour treatment time takes a bit of planning but definitely worth it.

Impressive product for anyone! I live near a river and it's nice to be able to cary this in my fanny pack on any day hike for emergencies.
Be a survivor man. Take it from a guy who drinks copious amounts of water this filter is the king of survival items. Survivorman Les Stroud has in fact contracted giardia in his survival adventures. Les is a teacher who's lessons are sometimes taught at the expense of his health. His lesson? Don't take chances with parasites or bacteria. This handy little filter fits in your back pocket and will filter up to 20 gallons enough to sustain one person for days to weeks. I keep one in the car one at home and I never hike anywhere without one.
Cheap insurance This one of those better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it items.I have not yet needed itbecause I have been lucky enough to not have to need it.That saidit could really save your life at bestand save you from some kind of disease at worst in an emergency situation.Besidesthey are really inexpensive and fit into your pocket.
Nice Filter I ordered a couple of these and keep them in my vehicles. We are often out hiking in the woods and either forget to bring water or run out of water. These filters are life savers! Just make sure you rinse all the carbon dust out of them before you have to use them.

Aqua Mira Aquamira Purifier Tablets Very effective, hardly changes taste at all.

  • Easy to Use - In a Resealable pouch
  • Kills at least 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and cysts (see Description)
  • Made in the U.S.A by aquamira Tech. (Logan, UT)
  • Includes 24 tablets - Treats 6 gallons of water
  • Meets EPA microbiological water purifier test standards

  • Very effective hardly changes taste at all. In my experience the various clorine dioxide products have very little effect on the taste of drinking water. Iodine and chlorine both make water taste pretty bad especially iodine. The overwhelming consensus among those who've really investigated it is that clorine dioxide is the way to go for a chemical treatment. Of course one may choose to filter or use a UV device like the Steripen or Aquastar.
Kills Germs Tasted Bad I brought Aquamira to Nepal as a backup to other water purification methods while trekking. I used it once and saved the rest to use as a last resort because it made the water taste like overchlorinated hot tub water. Potent strong bad taste. I'd recommend one of the brands that comes with a second tab to neutralize the chlorine taste. Or if you just don't care what your water tastes like um I guess this product is fine. It's not to be used alone in water that hasn't been filtered in some way.

only 3 years left not good for 5 as advertized Advertized as good for 5 years. Yes good for 5 years FROM MANUFACTURE DATE not purchase date. I found same item at several different WEB sites and two brick n mortar. All of them listed manufacture date about 6 months ago. There was not any manufacture date listed on this site. I just assumed shame on me these would be about the same. I figured I would get over 4 maybe as high as 4 1/2 years out of them. SurpriseSurprise Manufacture date was MAY of 2010. These are only good for 3 years 5 months. Not the 5 years as advertized. Depending on their inventory a year from now they might still be selling the MAY 2010 stock!! I blame both Amazon as well as the advertizer on this one. AMAZON ATTENTION!!!!! IF SOMEONE IS ADVERTIZING AN ITEM WITH AN EXPIRATION DATE THEN THEY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO POST THAT DATE IN THEIR DESCRIPTION. AMAZON SHAME..ON..YOU Next time I will buy it at the brick n mortar so I can see the expiration date. Spending the extra money would be worth it. However I do like the fact that these are blisterpacked instead of loose in a bottle. This way they can be split up into a few kits. If you open the ones in a bottle you are down to just 6 months of protection MAX.

  • Each kit contains everything you need to treat up to 60 gallons of water.
  • Treats drinking water using chlorine dioxide to kill bacteria.
  • The 2oz. size is perfect for treating stored water in 55 gallon or smaller drums
  • Convenient and economical 2oz. size for treating larger batches of water.

  • Great product Aquamira is easy to use fast and leaves almost no after taste.
airport security good job of purifying water does set off the chemical scanner at the airport. we got the royal treatment from TSA and their white pads.
Product is not what is listedAmazon deleted my last review The item is not described correctly in the text. The picture is for the 1 oz drops treating 30 gallons not 60 gallons. The title of the item is for the 1 oz drops that treat 30 gallons. The 1 oz containers for treating 30 gallons are what you will get. IGNORE the descriptive textyou are not buying the 2 oz drops that treat 60 gallons. I told both Reiss and Amazon that the text was wrong and they have still not changed it. Amazon deleted my original review which pointed out like the other reviewer that these are being falsely advertised. If you try to treat a 55 gallon drum with these drops you will NOT purify your water completely and your family may get ill. Amazon is essentially playing with people's health by not rectifying this.
Good product but not as expected I expected the larger size of Aqua Mira to be a larger version of the smaller containers with the tops easy to measure out the required number of drops to treat water in an outdoor setting. It seems the larger size is more set up to treating very large quantities of water. I was able to use the old small containers I had by removing the tops with difficulty and restocking the smaller size. It's OK but not what I expected. Hang onto to your smaller bottles if you use them to treat water for backpacking etc.
Works As Advertised I've used chlorine dioxide tablets to wash yeast in the past. The liquid version is MUCH easier to use and reacts in 15 minutes instead of 4 hours.Highly recommend for homebrewers who wash yeast.
Bought it for the emergency kit Looking to get a water storage barrel and we will need these to help keep it. Hopefully we will never have to actually use this product as they are for our earthquake/disaster kit. I only gave it 4 because I haven't actually used them yet.

  • great for emergency kits The product description had me at 30 tablets individually sealed in foil pouches. The iodine tablets tend to come in little jars that have an uncertain shelf life once opened. So these 30 individual pouches are now dispersed amongst various packs bins and vehicles. Perfect. The general rule is 1 gallon per person per day. That's 4 tabs per person per day of emergency unless you can boil the stuff At $2 per gallon I wouldn't use these for purifying a lot of water if I had other options. For example tossing a 7 gallon container of tap water into the truck gives me about the same amount of treated water as the 30 tablets could provide. Also never underestimate the usefulness of a gallon of bleach.
They worked just fine I have found that if you let the water sit for at least 6 8 hours the taste is not nearly as bad. You just have to make sure it is out of direct sunlight while it is purifying the water. So I tend to use them overnight if I have to.As for the taste if you are used to city water it isn't that bad if you let it sit out. If you are not used to chlorinated water it will taste like pool water.

Wash hands and contaminated clothing after handling. These are pure chlorine dioxide tablets! Packing these corrosive tablets in right next to the rest of my survival gear seems ludicrous. I'm giving this a bad review because the product description is misleading.
Good choice for water in Third World coutries. We took these tablets to Bangladesh and used them on a daily basis. You do have to wait three hours to make sure all the microorganisms are killed but the water tasted fine and no one got sick so these seemed to work well for us.
Best tasting water My friend and I went on a five day backpacking trip in CA and hands down these tablets produced the most normal tasting water.
FYI Expiration date I purchased these 01/27/11 to store for emergency preparedness. The tablets I received expire 06/2014. Anyone looking for solutions that will store for a longer period of time may want to find another method of purification.
